History of Chennai city’s landmark Connemara public library

History of Chennai city's landmark, Connemara public library


Hailey bury college in England, is the place where Indian civilians are trained. In 1861, in this college library, a situation aroused, were the number of books exceeded the storage capacity of the library. These books were sent to madras government and they handed it to the madras museum, which is considered as the part of British museum library. Till 1890 these books were kept in the madras museum.

Inauguration of Connemara public library


Connemara public library is inaugurated on December 5, 1896. In 1890 then governor of madras, lord Connemara, felt the need for a public library in Chennai. On March 22 1890 the foundation stone was laid by lord Connemara for the public library. The library was a part of cultural complex, which was once called the pantheon (A building in which the illustrious dead of a nation are buried or honored). On December 5 1896 the library named after lord Connemara and formally opened.

Developments of Connemara library


The library came in to existence as organization by appointing full librarian in the year 1929. It was opened to all in the year 1930 by the same year the first lending and home delivery services were started. Under, Tamil nadu public libraries act 1948, it was considered as state-central library in the year 1950. The United Nations recognized Connemara library as its depository center in the year 1955. The Tamil nadu state’s bibliography of children’s literature and Tamil books publications were started in the 1963 and 1964 respectively. In the year 1965 it was recognized as information centre by UNESCO organization. Commencement of institute of library sciences had happened in the year 1966. It was in the year 1968 the merger of children and state bibliography had happened.

Establishment of New building for Madras Central Library


In 1974 the three storied new building added. In this building were all functions taking place now. Here we can find a vast collection of books in an arrayed manner. There are text book section, periodicals hall, a reference room, a video room, a large floor for Indian language books, a Braille library, I A S study centre, browsing centre, permanent book fair centre, Xerox facilities and the library had been fully computerized which access to book easy. The library has a rare books collections like "The bible published in 1608", "Accounts of the trade in India by Lockyer (Charles)".

List of Connemara public library holidays


Library will be open through out the year expect on three national holidays: October 2, January 26 and August 15. Six festival holidays: pongal, Christmas, Tamil New Year day, sarasvathi pooja, vijayadasami day.

Rule for admission as member in Connemara public library : Only person above 17 years residing in Chennai and its vicinity will be admitted as a member.
Connemara public library timings : Working hours are from9.00 am to 7.30 pm on week days and 9.30 am to 6.00 pm on Sunday.
